Survey reveals strong support in Portugal for the euro, the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism and SURE
According to the latest European Commission Eurobarometer survey, public support for the euro remains very strong. The survey concludes that 77% of respondents consider that having the euro is a positive thing for the EU and 68% of Portuguese respondents consider that the euro is also good for the country. Furthermore, the results show a high level of support for Recovery and Resilience Mechanismthe instrument at the heart of NextGenerationEU: 70% of respondents in Portugal (75% across Europe) agree with the idea of a recovery plan that supports all Member States, as long as they carry out investments and reforms that are ecological, digital and social. The results also show strong support for SURE, the EUR 100 million instrument designed to protect jobs and incomes affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey also sought citizens’ views on issues relating to euro coins and banknotes. It was found that 64% of respondents are in favor of abolishing the 1 and 2 cent coins, reflecting a high and stable level of support, with percentages above 50% across all euro area countries.
