The snow falls in good quantity on the Pyrenees for several days.
However, the opening of the chain’s ski resorts will be uneven depending on the departments. The start of the ski season in the Pyrenees was announced for this Saturday, December 3, 2022. But some resorts had to review their plan.
The layer of snow is proving to be fragile at the foot of the slopes and so far, the production of artificial snow has been constrained by temperatures which have remained rather mild.
Postponed to Mourtis and Superbagnères
In Haute-Garonne, there is no need to look for an open ski slope. The Haute-Garonne Montagne union wants to announce itself to be open Superbagnères and Le Mourtis on… Monday, December 12, 2022.
“Less than ten centimeters of snow fell at 1800 m and barely more at 2000 m, notes Gianni Ragona, director of the Haute-Garonne mountain mixed union. This is not enough to offer a good product to customers. »
“It’s not cold enough”
Impossible to use artificial snow to compensate: “It is not cold enough to prevent snow cannons”, underlines the director of the Haute-Garonne mountain mixed union.
Bad news for mountain professionals in the Haute-Garonne resorts who are thus seeing their winter season cut by around ten days.
Peyragudes on December 10
Peyragudes, straddling Haute-Garonne and Hautes-Pyrénées, has also decided to postpone its opening scheduled for December 3. It invites skiers to meet on Saturday 10 December.
Ax-3-Domaines lacks (a little) snow
In Ariège, Ax-3-Domainsdue to the lack of snow on the plateau of Bonascre, the low point of the station, announces, like Peyragudes, to postpone its opening to December 10.
Same decision at Grand Tourmalet which plans to open on December 10.
“After several snowy episodes, the very mild weather this fall will not allow us to open the area on December 3rd,” announces the resort.
