One day after the Salzburg chocolate, another Salzburg industrial company announced the loss of many jobs on Thursday. The car electronics manufacturer Kyocera AVX in Salzburg-liefering laid off a third of the workforce – more than 80 women and men. The union demands a social plan.
At Kyocera AVX in Salzburg-liefering, a subsidiary of a large Japanese-American corporation, there are to be major “reductions in staff” over the next few months. The company manufactures electronics and special components for the automotive industry. The management informed the workforce on Thursday that a third of the jobs in Salzburg would be lost.
Problems with own suppliers, high electricity costs
82 of the 241 employees have already been registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS) for dismissal, says trade unionist Daniela Wiermeier from the ÖGB in Salzburg. He supports the company’s works councils: “A large part of the celebrations come from the blue-collar sector, it’s about a lot of women working part-time. The whole thing happens just before Christmas, where you can hear the drama announced for the direct.”
The union demands a social plan and a labor foundation. The layoffs are expected to last until next summer.
In a broadcast, Kyocera’s management emphasized that this step was intended to stabilize and preserve the Salzburg location. The company is struggling with procurement problems for components that are important for its own products: “The effects of global economic tensions continue to present us with challenges. Together with the current sharp rise in raw material, energy and production costs, they have a significant impact on our business.”
The Salzburg location should be retained
So far, the economic and energy crisis has made itself felt through increased competitive pressure, according to the management of Kyocera in Salzburg. In addition, concrete orders have been lost: “An improvement in the economic situation is difficult to forecast in the project for overall economic development. However, our order levels are not giving us the growth forecast we need.”
The parent company Kyocera in Japan and the USA is active in many industrial and business areas. A wide audience also knows him for his computer printer.
