THE BALL – Amorim tells how he lived the Portugal-Uruguay (Sporting)
Sporting make their debut this Wednesday in the League Cup against Farense, with Rúben Amorim starting the preview with another competition: the World Cup, after Portugal-Uruguay and the players involved.
The coach had already said that from a personal point of view he wants his players back quickly – Ugarte and Coates – which also leaves the door open to Portugal, an idea he reconfirmed.
«I am doubly happy. It could have been a little longer, because Ugarte could have played, he misses it, he knows what it costs him later to recover his physical indices. Coates played, with three centre-backs, even on the left, which is more demanding. Portugal won fairly, so Uruguay is closer to home and Portugal is qualified. We now have Fatawu [contra], Ugarte and Coates. Someone will go home, if it could be both… but for that Portugal would have to lose, so I’m a bit divided (laughs). What matters is that Portugal won and it’s good that it stays in first place. So I hope Uruguay doesn’t win and they go home.”
Is Portugal a candidate?: «We were never champions, someday it will happen. But we have a good group, I joined Palhinha and Matheus Nunes, there’s still Vitinha on the bench… with players of that quality he’s always a candidate. But I just want to beat Farense…”
