Portugal starts qualifying for the Women’s European Championship by smiling teams

Ninth in the world ranking, Fu Yu (18th in the individual table), Jieni Shao (56th) and Inês Matos (292nd) got the better of Italy.
This Tuesday, the women’s national table tennis team beat Italy by 3-1, at the start of Group 2 of the first qualifying phase for the European Team Championship, in a match held in Funchal, on the island of Madeira.
Ninth in the world ranking, Fu Yu (18th in the individual table), Jieni Shao (56th) and Inês Matos (292nd) got the better of Italy, 26th, in which Giorgia Piccoli (70th ) is the best positioned.
Fu Yu, with two victories, against Debora Vivarelli (3-2) to open and Giorgia Piccolin (3-0) to close, was decisive, adding to Jieni Shao’s victory against Piccolin (3-1).
The youngest among the Portuguese players who played, Inês Matos, had the only wish, by 3-2 against Gaia Monfardini.
The Portuguese will face, on Wednesday, the selection of the Czech Republic, in a new game scheduled for the Sports Complex of São Roque, in Funchal.
