Portugal wins in Estonia in qualifying for the European Women’s Basketball Championship
The Portuguese women’s basketball team won today in Estonia by 76-52, in a one-way game, in the fourth round of Group G qualifying for the 2023 European Championship, played in Tartu.
The base Maria João Correia played an important role in the Portuguese progress, counting as the best scorer of the match, with 15 points, having also captured five rebounds, well supported by the winger Josephine Filipe, author of 14 points, while posted by Maria Kostourkova dominated in the table fight, with nine rebounds.
Portugal, which at half-time was leading by 48-28, consolidated second place in the group, two points away from leader Greece, which today beat Great Britain, ranked third, by 72-65, on a par with Estonia, fourth and last, both one point behind the Portuguese team.
The ‘quinas’ team repeated the triumph of the group’s opening game, in which it prevailed by 62-43 against Estonia, before losing to Greece, by 57-64, and to Great Britain, by 69- 76 after extra time.
The Portuguese players entered at full speed and the 15-point advantage at the end of the first period (27-12) left no doubt about the winner of the match and very little about the high difference in the result.
Despite having returned to superiority in the second partial (21-16), Estonia managed to mitigate the imbalance, which was accentuated, interrupted in the third period, with an unusually low decline (8-6), and in the fourth, much more productive (20-18).
Despite the robust triumph, Portugal is not in a very favorable position to qualify for the final phase, reserved only for the victories of the 10 qualifying groups and the four best runners-up.
