Catholic youth in the Archdiocese of Cologne celebrates its anniversary
The BDKJ was founded in 1947 against the background of the experiences of National Socialism. History has carried the association to this day. “It is important for our actions now and in the future. From her we learn to stand up for a humane society and a church for all,” says Sarah Bonk, BDKJ diocesan chairwoman.
Living faith, learning democracy
Just like back then, the merger of Catholic youth organizations is united by the will to make the world a little better – including as part of the regular 72-hour campaigns by the BDKJ and the annual carol singers campaign. This commitment brings the faith and convictions of young people to life. At the same time, they learn how democracy works. A principle, as Bonk also states in the speech of the BDKJ board: “We draw strength from a strong and established tradition. Since the founding of the BDKJ, we have been shaped by a liberal and democratic culture, which we live in the youth organizations and for which we work in society and in the church”.
For 75 years, the umbrella organization of Catholic youth organizations has been campaigning for children and young people both at federal level and in the Archdiocese of Cologne, where it is the voice of around 50,000 young people involved in church, politics and society.
The BDKJ always stays close to its topics: the commitment to a more just world, fair trade, sustainability, participation and inclusion.
“Strong voice of young people”
“We take the liberty to think and to demand what we consider right based on our Christian faith. We are the strong voice of young people in the Archdiocese of Cologne,” adds Konrad Meyer, the spiritual leader of the BDKJ in the archdiocese. Belonging to the Roman Catholic Church has always been and still is characterized by tensions.
The present faith is closely linked to the socio-political commitment – then as now, the BDKJ stands up for a more just, more tolerant and more peaceful world. The mission is and remains the same: to work for the future of young people.
The anniversary celebration was also characterized by a colorful program, a church service, an exhibition on the anniversary, fun and games and a party with DJ FYNN and the band ALUIS.
