Marcelo says that numbers of domestic violence in Portugal “are now glaring”
President of the Republic asks everyone to fight violence against women
The President of the Republic considers that the numbers of domestic violence in Portugal “are glaring today, as well as inequality still continuing”, and asks everyone to combat violence against women in its multiple forms.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa makes this appeal in a message published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
According to the head of state, this date calls for “the action of all Portuguese men and women so that, in an effective and permanent way, all forms of aggression against women are eradicated”.
“Women’s irreplaceable and extraordinary role in Portuguese society, earned on our own merit, obliges each of us to act, to denounce and prevent any and all forms of violence against women in our country”, she says.
The President of the Republic adds that the numbers of domestic violence in Portugal “are now glaring, as well as the still continuous inequality that Portuguese women are subject to, in the most varied social and professional contexts”.
“We must all unite against them and against what they represent, in the lives of each of the victims and their families, but also in what they reveal about our community”, he defends.
“On this day and every day that the future awaits us, let us know how to stand by the indelible contribution of Portuguese women to the development of Portugal, eliminating and combating, in its multiple forms, violence against women, and not condoning with complicit or comfortable silences omissions”, appeals Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
In 2021, on this international day established by the United Nations, the Belém Palace was lit in orange, to give visibility to the cause of combating violence against women.
This year, the Presidency of the Republic has already communicated that the Palace of Belém will not have the usual Christmas lighting “nor other witnesses special lighting”, to save energy.
