Tools: Alpen-Maykestag increases sales – salzburg.ORF.at
Business
The drill and milling cutter manufacturer Alpen-Maykestag, headquartered in Puch near Hallein (Tennengau), increased its sales by 1.8 percent to EUR 54.6 million in the 2021/2022 financial year. According to the company, the markets have developed very differently – also in anticipation of the war in Ukraine.
The sales opportunities in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine have collapsed completely, and declines are also known in the neighboring countries, according to the management.
Chile and the Netherlands are buying more and more
“The increases in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy are moderate in the range of 1.8 to 2 percent,” says Managing Director Claudia Zoff. On the other hand, the stakes in individual countries have increased disproportionately. In Chile, for example, sales increased by more than 25 percent and in the Netherlands by almost 24 percent. The export rate at Alpen-Maykestag is 80 percent.
Industry is booming, do-it-yourselfers are declining
Around ten percent growth in sales was achieved for milling tools for trade and industry (Maykestag) in 2021/2022. In the drill bits (Alps) business area, the sales curve has shown a downward dip since the beginning of the year after the upswing caused by the DIY boom during the Corona peak. Nevertheless, the turnover here is higher than before the lockdown years.
Manager relies on local suppliers
The family business is currently struggling with the massive increase in energy and raw material prices. “We process more than 1,200 tons of steel every year. The most important raw material for us, which we mainly source from Austria and Germany for reasons of quality and regionality,” says manager Zoff. In addition, the logistics chains are still not working 100 percent, resulting in massive delivery delays at international airports. The shortage of skilled workers is also a source of headaches.
Other locations in Carinthia and Styria
As of October 31, 2022, 344 people were employed at the three company locations in Puch near Hallein, St. Gallen (Styria) and Ferlach (Carinthia). The new logistics center went into operation in Puch in 2022, and the second partial renovation of the company building was completed in Ferlach. The development of sales at Alpen-Maykestag has recently been quite volatile: due to the pandemic, sales in the 2019/2020 financial year initially fell from EUR 50.7 to 45.3 million. In the 2020/2021 financial year there was then an increase of 18.1 percent 53.4 million euros.
