In a campaign by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2020, the Bottrop town hall was voted the fourth most beautiful town hall in North Rhine-Westphalia – behind Recklinghausen, Paderborn and Brilon. The construction of the town hall began in 1877, in a second construction phase from 1913 to 1916 the original office building was expanded, including the clock tower. Plans are currently underway for an expansion of the town hall on the site of the hall building, which is to be demolished for this purpose.
