From Iceland — Trans Day of Remembrance remembered in Iceland
Published November 21, 2022
November 20 is Remembrance Day Trans, where trans people around the world pay tribute to those who lost their lives to transphobia in the past 12 months, whether by murder or suicide. Iceland was no exception because the trans community in Reykjavík and elsewhere participated in the memorial.
For that reason, the music hall Harpa lit up the building in the colors of the trans flag, posting, “International Trans Day of Remembrance is observed annually on November 20. The day is intended to remember trans people who have been murdered or taken their own lives. Although Iceland is ahead of many countries, there are still transgender people in Iceland who die due to stigma, discrimination or exclusion.”
Reykjavík City Hall also flew trans flags in front of its building. Nearby, at the offices of the National Queer Organization, transgender people and their allies gathered to remember those lost.
This memorial included speeches, poetry, music and a silent candlelight vigil.
From 1 October 2021 to 20 September 2022, 390 transgender people die violently. Most recently, Daniel Astontrans man, was murdered on a mass shooting at a gay club in Colorado Springs last Saturday night.
