FC Wil Frauen is eliminated from the cup
Swiss Cup
Despite a big fight: FC Wil Frauen lost the round of 16 against the clear favorites Servette Geneva 9-1
The big sensation did not want to succeed that evening. In the round of 16 they lost 9-1 to Super League leaders Servette FC Chênois Féminin. But you can’t blame Wil for one thing: The team gave their all until the final whistle.
“In the end there is a 1:9 on the scoreboard. It looks very bitter, but in my opinion it doesn’t reflect our performance, »said Wil coach Florian Holenstein after the Cup round of 16 against Super League leaders Servette FC Chênois Féminin.
The difference between fourth place in National League B and the best Swiss women’s soccer team at the moment was just too big. “We wanted to sell ourselves as expensively as possible and try to play our game,” said Holenstein and added:
“We made certain adjustments to our game, but basically we played just like in the league.”
Wil rewards himself with the 1:1 equalizer
Although the Wilers showed a flawless fighting performance, it was already 1-0 for Geneva in the fifth minute. Sandrine Mauron opened the score. After that, Wil was able to keep zero for a long time. Although the super league came dangerously in front of the goal time and time again, they failed again and again due to their own inability.
Thanks to the poor evaluation of chances by the guests, ten minutes before the break in the Bergholz stadium, the FC Wil women are still only 0: 1. Then the highlight of the Wilers: In the 35th minute they brought a cross from the left into the penalty area. Alana O’Neill still missed, but behind her Fabienne Lämmler was able to equalize to make it 1-1. Was there something against the former Champions League participant Servette Geneva?
The answer came relatively quickly: no. Just two minutes after the much-celebrated 1-1, it was again 2-1 for Geneva thanks to the goals of Maria Korhonen and before the break it was 3-1 for the guests due to a Wiler owner. Holenstein said at the first half:
“I’m happy for the team that they were able to make it 1-1. You reacted to a deficit against a super league team. That is not easy.”
The two goals before half-time were very bitter from the point of view of the Wilers. If the 1-1 had been saved at half-time, the game might have gone a little differently in the second half. “In the first half, the opposing coach raised his voice a few times. That means we annoyed him and he was looking for solutions, »said Holenstein.
Napkin in half two very efficiently
But the sovereign Super League leader found the solutions. Only the guests played in the second half. Shortly after the change of sides it was Maria Korhonen who pushed in to make it 4:1. After that, Sandrine Mauron scored for the second time and the two substitutes Alice Berti and Natalia Padilla Bidas decided the party with their goals.
«Towards the end you could tell that we were out of breath. But I’m still satisfied with the performance of my team. I take a lot of positive things with me into the championship. Next week there is no opponent waiting for us with Thun Berner Oberland. We have to give 100 percent again to get points,” said Holenstein.
