The Black Lives Matter protest will take place in Valletta on Saturday
The activists on Saturday will take to the streets of Valletta in a demonstration against what they say is “continuous and regular incidences of racial violence and abuse of power against black and brown people in Malta”.
Black Lives Matter (Malta) is organizing the protest – DEMONSTRATION: Where’s the Respect? No ‘Us’ Without ‘Them’ – along with a number of other organisations. The activists will meet at 6pm in Jean de la Valette Square in Valletta.
“For decades we have been hearing about incidents of institutional neglect and racial violence, often at the hands of those entrusted with responsibility and duty to protect. Enough!
“All members of Maltese society, regardless of background or origin, deserve to be respected and to feel safe in their community,” said BLM Malta.
A similar protest was held in 2020 in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, which began in the United States after the police killing of an unarmed black man George Floyd that summer.
A year earlier, in 2019, 42-year-old Lassana Cisse was killed in a drive-by shooting in Ħal Far as he was going home on April 6. Two soldiers – Francesco Fenech and Lorin Scicluna – were accused of his murder as well as the attempted murder of two other men and a hit and run incident which was exposed by Times of Malta. They denied the charges.
All four victims were black.
