The digital archives of parties: a seminar at the University of San Marino to prevent everything from being lost
On December 2, a free event with academics and professionals on database management, email retention and more.
“Faced with the risk of losing an important part of the political history of the republic, we want to offer information and expertise to support parties and some categories, for example trade unions, in managing and maintaining their digital archives, to allow them to be consulted in the future quickly and comprehensively”. This, in the words of the teacher and researcher Luca Gorgolini, is the objective of a training seminar organized by the University of the Republic of San Marino and scheduled for Friday 2 December from 9 am in the Aula Magna of the university headquarters of the former Court , via Salita alla Rocca 44, in the historic centre.
Together with academics, institutional officials and professionals from realities such as the National Central Library of Florence, the participants will come into contact with, among other things, the rules and practices of digital archiving, the preservation of electronic mail and databases. This within the framework of a broader research project with which the University of San Marino intends to also publish a guide to the paper archives produced by the parties of the Titan from the end of the 19th century onwards. On the table are over 2,000 folders containing documents that would extend over 300 meters if placed one after the other.
“But while once everything was printed and archived – explains Gorgolini – now we find ourselves in a different context. What the parties produce on the web, on social networks, in blogs and beyond, risk being lost if they are not adequately matched. The University will therefore make available a set of good practices related to the conservation of digital documents in order to avoid this danger”.
During the seminar, among others, Chiara Storti of the National Central Library of Florence, the former superintendent of the Central State Archives of Rome Stefano Vitali and the director of the Cultural Institutes, Paolo Rondelli, will intervene.
The project, entitled “The political archives of San Marino: census, digitization and use”, is one of the eight researches promoted by the University of San Marino with a view to providing a concrete advantage for the community and the territory. Among the academics they involved, in addition to Gorgolini, Michele Chiaruzzi and Massimo Mastrogregori.
Participation in the seminar is free. No membership is required. For further information: [email protected].
