Slovakia presented its draft law on environmental change
At the climate conference of the United Nations in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt (COP27), Slovakia presented a draft law on climate change and Slovakia’s low-carbon transformation and supported the direction of the European Union to adapt efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 57 percent.
Slovakia presented the prepared domestic instrument, the law on the change of the low level and the transformation of Slovakia. The legislation will set targets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In bilateral negotiations with ministers and state secretaries responsible for the protection of the territories of Germany, Austria, Finland and the Netherlands, delegations exchanged experiences and recommendations from the preparation of their national climate laws.
All partners appreciated the Slovak proposal. “Stan’s colleagues and their experts on the modern climate system, which we are preparing a law that will be a responsible relationship to future generations, as well as the world,” State Secretary Michal Kiča evaluated. Thanks to the approval of Fit for 55, the EU will move towards improving its reduction target for 2030 from 55 percent to 57 percent.
“However, it is necessary for the EU to work on its position as a leader in the field of climate policy. Energy and food, caused by the war in Ukraine, represent a determined response in this sense,” State Secretary Kiča underlined.
The Ukrainian Minister of the Environment, Ruslan Strilets, led the Slovak delegation through the pavilion of Ukraine, which depicts the devastating effects of the military aggression of the Russian Federation on its nature, especially the soil and biodiversity.

State Secretary Kiča highlighted plans for the ecological transformation and restoration of Ukraine after the end of the war, in which Slovakia will help. The Slovak delegation also supported the attempts of the Czech Republic to organize In the framework of a bilateral meeting with the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic Marian Jureček, the Slovak delegation fully met the requirements of the Czech Republic to organize COP29 in 2024.
