invasion of rats in the school of Montolivet, a large-scale rat extermination is planned
Since November 8, the parents of students at the Montolivet school in the 12th arrondissement of Marseille have denounced the presence of a large number of rats in the establishment.
Rats running around in the refectory, students forced to have lunch in classes, a closed gymnasium, the infestation of rats is growing day by day in this school in the 12th arrondissement of Marseille.
And this Thursday, it was the dead day in front of the Montolivet school, parents and students decided to step up to make themselves heard and stayed outside the establishment.
The alerts of the magnitude that the situation is taking, the services of the city as well as the personnel of the National Education came to meet the parents and the personnel of the school to “reassure about the handling of the situation”; explains Pierre Huguet, aDeputy Mayor of Marseille andn charge of education, school canteens, tutoring and education centres.
“I was alerted on November 8, and the municipal services were present on the 9th. The diagnosis passed, we are in an extraordinary situation, because the presence of rats, in numbers like this, is not classic”, insists Pierre Huguet.
According to the deputy “It is important to welcome students in the best conditions”however, the establishment has not closed its doors, contrary to the request of the parents of students.
Interviewed on Tuesday, the parents were worried about the situation.
“The rats roam the classrooms, the canteen. My daughter has hurt me too much. She didn’t want to go to the bathroom all day, because she’s afraid of coming across rats. There’s a hole in the ceiling in the toilet, they’ve been there“, denounced a mother of a student.
The elected representative for schools works closely with AIcha Guedjali, cmunicipal councilor in charge of insalubrity and pests. She said on Tuesday that “The town hall has planned to undertake work on the ceiling, to fill the holes and to install ventilation grilles”.
“At first, there was a diagnosis, then faced with this situation, a reinforced protocol was put in place with an agent who comes by twice a day to pick up the trapped rats”, details Pierre Huget.
And this weekenda major rat extermination operation over two days is planned with a thorough cleaning of the establishment”this is what came to announce to the parents Aicha Gedjali and Pierre Huguet.
The elected official also specifies that “work has been carried out this week to prevent rats from entering the school with the installation of nets”.
But obviously the rats proliferate in the environment close to the school and for this the town hall says “to have approached the metropolis and to have asked for more regular garbage collection and sewer cleaning, to carry out joint action in the school district”.
In the 15 days following this major rat extermination and sanitation operation in the neighborhood, a follow-up will be put in place to judge the evolution of the situation.
Later, “an investigation will be carried out to understand why and how these rats were able to enter the school and multiply so much, to arrive at this exceptional situation”, announces Pierre Huguet.
And in mid-December, an experiment with ferrets will also be conducted to try to eradicate this recurring phenomenon in Marseille.
