Florence, 130 digital bins damaged in the Piazza Vieusseux area
One hundred and thirty digital bins damaged by drilling holes in the card on which the key rests to open them. The vandal raids (the damages did not occur in a single day) were concentrated in the area of Piazza Vieusseux in Florence. In particular, Alia found vandalized bins in via Milanesi, via Meyer, via Scipione de’ Ricci, via Zobi, via Bonaini, via Romagnosi, via Pagnini and via Bianchi.
The waste disposal company filed a complaint with the police. It is probable that in the next few hours some traces will emerge for the investigations from the examination of the cameras present in the streets where the vandals struck. The scheme always helps the same: a clean and precise hole, probably made with a drill, in the digital card that allows the operation of the dumpster.
Vandalized in this way, the containers for differentiated collection remain partially open (therefore without having to use the key) or they get blocked and no one can use them anymore. Alia informs that she is proceeding with the replacement.
The dumpsters were opened with a drill, whoever agitated punched the central part of the display of the control units of the containers that can be opened with a personal A-pass in sequence, making them unusable. Alia’s technicians have replaced the 130 damaged control units and the company has already filed a complaint with the Carabinieri for malicious damage caused, which primarily damages users who see the bin opening system unavailable because their A-pass can no longer work. In the Piazza Vieusseux area, included in the third transformation lot of the Florence Circular City project, the positioning of the new digital bins was completed just last month with the installation of over 400 new digital road bins which the use of the A – pass for the transfer of all fractions of waste, except glass, so as to record every single insertion and improve the quality of the materials to be started in the recycling chain. Alia is currently in the process of positioning the new digital bins in the adjacent Fortezza area, where there will be around 300 new bins when fully operational.
“We will not stop in front of some vandal or criminal who ruins our bins. – specifies the city councilor Andreea Giorgio – We ask everyone to give us a hand, to supervise and pay attention, to report as we did together with Alia. These acts damage a common good and cost us all, they are against the public interest and we must condemn and fight against them. The process of transforming the waste collection system in the city is continuing and we are continuously improving it to make citizens more and more informed, to limit inconvenience as much as possible and to improve the quality of our collection, in a continuous dialogue with Alia, the neighborhood presidents and citizens. This process will continue because the objectives of reducing waste and increasing the quantity and quality of our separate collection are essential for our city”.
“These malicious actions are unbearable – says Nicola Ciolini, president of Alia Servizi Ambientali – first of all putting our users in difficulty in the areas where these acts of vandalism have occurred, citizens who every day sort their waste with commitment and who find a good common at their disposal rendered unusable by someone’s stupidity. Among other things, these damages involve additional costs for thousands of euros to be paid by the community since each electronic control unit must be quickly replaced. We hope that our complaint will allow the competent authorities to identify those responsible. We are in contact with the Municipal Administration to verify if it is possible to set up supervisory initiatives and strengthened controls to counter this odious phenomenon. Alia will not be intimidated and will not stop the ongoing process of transforming the service.”
