The United Nations Organization has opened its new headquarters in Bilbao for the Local Coalition Secretariat that will work on the development of the 2030 Agenda; in order to promote the Sustainable Development Goals.

Bilbao inaugurated this Monday the UN headquarters for the Local Coalition Secretariat 2030, a United Nations institution for Sustainable Development at the municipal and regional level.
The headquarters will be located on the sixth floor of the Historical Archive of the Basque Country and the Gogora Institute, on Maria Díaz de Haro street, in Bilbao. The Basque Government has already announced that it will contribute 1.5 million a year to this institution during the first three years.
The Local 2030 Coalition aims to promote the development of the 2030 Agenda in regional and municipal institutions, which already concentrate 70% of the actions on climate change.
The Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu presided over the event, together with the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Amina J Mohamedforeign minister jose manuel albares and the mayor of Bilbao Juan Mari Aburto.
“We are in times of crisis, uncertainty and systemic transformations”the Lehendakari pointed out, “and the difficulties in reaching and maintaining consensus on the challenges facing humanity are increasing”.
In this situation, “The 2030 Agenda is a necessity and an opportunity”. In fact, according to Urkullu, it is “a tool with global projection and local application, useful for promoting sustainable and inclusive human development.”
“The fight against poverty, gender equality, education, climate change, care for the planet, inclusive economic growth, sustainable cities and communities, justice or peace are global and local challenges that we will address jointly”, Urkullu stressed, and “the effects of the pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine make them more pressing”.
In this sense, the Lehendakari wanted to reaffirm “our commitment to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals”, as well as our commitment to the methodology of the concrete. The 2030 Agenda “needs to move from words to deeds”.

The Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina J Mohamedhas highlighted the importance of cities to achieve the SDGs: “we have to improve urban planning, public services, the transition to renewable energies, because cities emit 70% of carbon”, he has described.
The UN leader congratulated Spain and the Basque Country for their commitment and urged them to launch transformative actions from the local level to create a more sustainable world. “I hope that the Bilbao headquarters will become a voice with authority“, it is finished.
For its part, jose manuel albaresMinister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, has highlighted the set of work and has valued the visit of the Deputy Secretary General.
