Government approves report and application regarding the impact of a waiver of public transport tickets in Liechtenstein
In its session on October 31, 2022, the government passed the report and motion regarding the acknowledgment of the effects of a waiver of public transport tickets in Liechtenstein for the attention of the state parliament.
In the Mobility Concept 2030, the government’s package of measures “Promotion of public transport (PT) and walking and cycling” provided, among other things, that a study should be used to examine the effects of completely dispensing with public transport tickets in Liechtenstein. The results of the study “Effects of not using public transport tickets in Liechtenstein” are now being submitted to the state parliament with the report and application.
The study also includes, among other things, Liechtenstein’s experiences with free public transport in 1988 and findings from abroad. Furthermore, the study examines the consequences of free public transport in terms of demand, traffic effects, environmental aspects and operational, organizational and administrative challenges. In addition, it is shown what effects the introduction of free public transport would have on the population, on the companies based there and on the general attractiveness of Liechtenstein as a location.
Based on the results of the study, the government comes to the conclusion that a waiver of public transport tickets should not be pursued any further. The state parliament is expected to deal with the study in its December session of this year.
