Munich today – news from October 30th, 2022 – Munich
Historically burdened street names – a sensitive topic that has been discussed in Munich for centuries. One of these streets in question is Hilblestrasse. It was named in honor of Friedrich Hilble in 1956. According to the street description, he made a name for himself as head of the municipal welfare and youth welfare office.
About 20 years ago, the history workshop in Neuhausen drew attention to Hilble’s Nazi past. An investigation later confirmed that Hilble, while not a member of the Nazi Party, was an anti-Semite and a willing enforcer of Nazi laws. He is said to have refused Jews social welfare, branded them as “asocial” in Nazi jargon, and helped get them sent to labor and concentration camps. The city archives recommended renaming Hilblestraße in 2015.
In the same year, however, the city council decided to systematically check all streets in Munich for Nazi, anti-Semitic, racist or colonialist contamination. About 327 street names turn out to be worth discussing, In 45 cases, the city archive immediately saw a need for action (SZ Plus). A decision on these 45 roads is expected around the turn of the year.
Since the district committee had already proposed a name for Hilbestraße, the city council preferred the renaming. This Friday, the ten-year discussion came to an end with the inauguration of the new sign. On November 2, the street will then be officially renamed Maria-Luiko-Straße after the artist Marie-Luise Kohn.
For the an unnecessary administrative act, for the others an important revision of a 66-year-old and politically incorrect decision.
