In the pre-election campaign, Israeli politicians make promises to Ukraine: what should we expect
Above all, Ukraine hopes to receive an early warning system from Israel.
In the pre-election campaign, Israeli politicians make promises to Ukraine, it says TSN.
Another special election in Israel, the fifth in the last four years, is taking place against the background of information that Israel’s bitter enemy Iran has strengthened its alliance with Russia. Both this and the actions of the aggressor country unexpectedly changed the mood of local voters and almost all politicians started talking about Ukraine.
The many-time prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, who is popularly called Bibi, has been prime minister longer than anyone in the history of Israel – a total of more than 15 years. But in 2019, he resigned due to a corruption scandal. Benjamin Netanyahu is currently facing legal proceedings where he is accused of bribery, bribery and lying. He has already announced that he is going to achieve a radical judicial reform in the event of a return to power. “For him, this is a struggle, life or death. That is why his campaign is so strong and effective,” political scientist Amots Asa-El assures.
Bibi’s successful Likud party ranks first in the ratings.
The last formed coalition, headed by Yair Lapid, included representatives of both right and left forces, it was popularly called the “anti-baby” block, but it did not last long either. “The billion-dollar question is whether they will assemble a coalition, and that’s literally the cost of the election campaign. The political system of Israel is such that it is practically impossible to assemble a stable coalition under its conditions,” local journalist Serhii Auslender assures.
The majority of sociologists maintained until the last that, unlike European voters, for Israeli voters, the attitude towards the war with Russia against Ukraine is not important. “This is not true, because as you have seen in the last two weeks, all parties have declared their support for Ukraine, except for Lieberman’s Our Home Israel,” reports pro-Russian views. Also, “Likud” – Netanyahu said that the issue of supplying weapons to Ukraine will be reviewed as the prime minister,” says Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevhen Korniychuk.
“We understand that there are many voters with a pronounced pro-Ukrainian position. And these are not only people from Ukraine, they are also people from other countries of the former USSR, in particular from Russia, from Belarus, and Hebrew-speaking Israelis as well,” says Serhii Auslender.
While Israel is ready with humanitarian aid, non-flying means, and food. Weapons are not provided categorically and in general a mandatory conflict is kept. However, Russia itself can change Israel’s position. “In addition to the elections, Russia’s cooperation with Iran, which is the number one enemy in the region, played in our favor. If Israel agrees to help Ukraine, it will probably be in a non-public way,” the ambassador adds.
Above all, Ukraine hopes to receive an early warning system from Israel. We continue to ask for Israeli air defense developments such as a railway dome, in the last month anti-drone equipment has become relevant, which can be used to protect against Iranian drones more reliably, but only a stable government can make such a decision. “We cannot get sick of many internal, bilateral issues. The request to provide a loan to Ukraine remains unconsidered for half a year, we asked for half a billion dollars,” the ambassador notes.
After the election, the winner will have a maximum of one and a half months to form a coalition, if he fails to do so, the president in Israel is a non-executive and representative position, and will transfer these powers to another party. If she doesn’t make it in the next month, Israel will again have elections – the 6th in 4 years.
