Fewer parking spaces for residents of the old town – salzburg.ORF.at

The number of parking spaces for residents of Salzburg’s old town will be reduced from 2024. First of all, this affects Waagplatz and Mozartplatz, which are being redesigned. Owners of special parking permits may then park in other short-term parking zones.
Mayor Harald Preuner (ÖVP) announces that when Waag and Mozartplatz have new pavement and perhaps a fountain and no more sidewalks, then the parking spaces there will be history. This is already noted on the forms for extending the parking permit, the mayor explains.
“Those affected should be assigned other parking spaces in the city center or in the pedestrian zone without much effort. And Waagplatz and Mozartplatz are the first to come into question. The planning is still ongoing and no steps will be necessary before 2024. But as soon as the construction work begins, the vehicles have to go there,” says Preuner.
“Garage expansion would have brought greater relief”
These replacement parking spaces should be at a reasonable distance from the respective apartment. “It would have made sense to expand the Mönchsberg garage to get cars away from the old town on a large scale. But for now we’re only talking about Waaplatz and Mozartplatz and not, for example, Kapitelplatz, where there are easily 50 cars, nor the inner courtyards of St. Peter, where we could have gotten 80 cars away. At Waagplatz and Mozartplatz, on the other hand, there are maybe 15 cars in total. We won’t be able to do more anyway – because the big solution is currently not possible because we can’t expand the Mönchsberg garage,” emphasizes Preuner.
However, fewer parking spaces are likely to result in even fewer residents of the old town.
