Formerly called place Matabiau, Joan of Arc Square is set to change in future years. It is in any case the wish of Jean-Luc Moudencwho announces to Toulouse news his will to pedestrianize and of vegetate this unmissable place in the Pink City.
An aging square and bus station
Located in the extension of rue d’Alsace-Lorraine, Place Jeanne d’Arc is well known to Toulouse residents and Tisséo bus users since it hosts a large bus station… which is currently under construction.
Created in the 1970s and now almost obsolete, this bus station is partially closed due to work to make the platforms accessible for people with reduced mobility (PRM). The first earthworks having revealed a possible fragility on one of the pillars of the structure, this led Tisséo to temporarily close the bus station time to complete the security checks. Pending the results of the expertise, the bus lines serving Joan of Arc are therefore reorganized and only three bus lines have access to the station.
Aging, the bus station and the square will be evaluated in the coming years. Because the least we can say is that this square – which is wide open to road traffic – is today far from pleasant for pedestrians and bicycles.
Towards “a transformation of Place Jeanne d’Arc”
While several pedestrianization projects have been launched or are planned since the beginning of his mandate (renovation of rue de Metz, rue Croix Baragnon or Grand rue Saint-Michel), the mayor of Toulouse intends to go further and take advantage of of the future arrival of the 3e metro line (which is scheduled to come into service at the end of 2028), for completely reorganize Place Jeanne d’Arc.
“I gave instructions so that at the end of the mandate, we deal with another subject which has been present in the corner of my head for a long time: it is the Place Jeanne d’Arc. We need to have a transformation of Place Jeanne d’Arc which will only be possible thanks to the 3e underground line. I hope that we will work on it in the years to come”, announces Jean-Luc Moudenc to Toulouse news.
A partially vegetated square
About Place Jeanne d’Arc, the mayor of Toulouse adds:
“What I want is to be able to eliminate most of the buses thanks to the reorganization made possible by the commissioning of the 3rd line. This will also allow the roof of the bus station to be removed. The idea , it is to decide on a new place with the inhabitants, and that we vegetate, even if we will not be able to vegetate the whole place because of the influence of the car park. But we will be able to find a place effect which today today is very broken!”
After Place Saint-Sernin, Place Saint-Pierre and Place du Busca, it is therefore another place in Toulouse that will be modified in depth in the years to come.
