16 disability activists who had been tried at the Toulouse court in 2021 to obstruct traffic, after having invaded the airport runways, but also the SNCF tracks – resulting in the blocking of planes and TGVs – in 2018, were before the Toulouse Court of Appeal on Thursday October 27, 2022.
Sentences that have been reduced
At first instance, the court recognized the guilt of the various defendants in this case. This is Odile Maurin, figure of the disabled cause in the Pink City, who received the heaviest sentence. The president of the Handi-Social association had been given a six-month suspended prison sentence.
This Thursday, after being heard last June, their sentences were reduced. They were sentenced by the Toulouse Court of Appeal to fines ranging from 600 euros firm to 1,200 euros suspended.
Appeal in cassation
“Although the sentence is softened, our request for release under freedom of expression and for having acted in a state of necessity was in fact not accepted. Each of us must therefore pay without delay 169 euros in procedural costs, plus the costs of the lawyers of the opposing parties (namely Airbus, SNCF, Air France and Toulouse Airport). In addition, Odile must pay without waiting for her financial condemnation. We are not guilty of anything except for having acted for our lives. We were and still are in a state of need to act to end the segregation of people with disabilities,” explains the collective.
The 16 activists have announced that they will appeal to the Court of Cassation.
