Brussels turns streetlights back on at night | Brussels
BrusselsEarlier, the mayors of Brussels decided to turn off the street lighting at night as a cost-saving measure. But persistent complaints about insecurity have reversed that decision.
Less than a month ago, in agreement with the intermunicipal company Sibelga, it was decided to switch off the street lighting half an hour before sunrise, as measures to save energy. The mayors of the 19 municipalities unanimously agreed.
But in the weeks that followed, complaints continued to come from concerned road users from parents taking children to school after dark. That’s why the mayors decided to roll back. From Saturday, the street lights will therefore remain on until the sun rises.
“We were looking for a balance between safety, people’s comfort and money and energy savings. In the name of safety, we are now asking Sibelga to reverse the decision,” Vincent De Wolf (MR) told BRUZZ, mayor of Etterbeek and chairman of the conference of Brussels mayors.
