Artistic Gymnastics World Championships – Belgium and Nina Derwael score 156,063 points in qualifying on Saturday
Noémie Louon, injured Thursday in training, was injured by Yléa Tollet. Lisa Vaelen, Maellyse Brassaert, Nina Derwael and Jutta Verkest will have to wait for the last rotations on Sunday to find out if Belgium is in the top 8 qualified for the final. Lisa Vaelen is the first of the Belgians in individual with 52.432 points and can still hope for a place in the final of the individual all-around. The United States did better already on Saturday with 167,263 points. After more than a year of absence due to a foot injury, Nina Derwael returned to competition and produced her performances with a score of 12.566 on beam due to a fall. Only Lisa Baelen will not have fallen on the beam on the Belgian side. On floor, Lisa Vaelen (13.200) obtained the best mark of the Belgian gymnasts who totaled 75.732 points at the halfway point. Lisa Vaelen was still taking care of her performances on vault (13.499, 3rd provisional), but could not avoid a fall on the uneven bars where Jutta Verkest signed a performance scored at 12.866, while Belgium had gone to 115.831 after three rotations. Nina Derwael, double world champion, double European champion and Olympic champion in this apparatus, ended her day with a score of 14.700 on the uneven bars, the best of the evening. The Liverpool Worlds bring into play the first three Olympic tickets for Paris 2024. They will be awarded to the nations appearing on the podium of the team event. The first eight nations at the end of the qualifications will be guaranteed to participate in the Antwerp Worlds next year, also qualifying for the 2024 Olympics. (Belga)
