Defenders Michal Beňo and Samuel Hain, as rookies, were nominated by the Slovak hockey team for the German Cup in Krefeld.
It features only players from the Slovak and Czech top leagues. Craig Ramsay’s assistants will be Andrej Podkonický and Peter Frühauf, who will also act as national team scouts.
The staff headed by head Craig Ramsay and general manager Miroslav Šatan also included a third newcomer on the nomination list, but goalkeeper Samuel Hlavaj will only attend the training camp in Bratislava with the national team.
Twenty-year-old Beňo from Bratislava Slovan and five years older Hain from Zvolen will also travel to Krefeld, where they will be able to make their debut in national time. The twenty-two-member squad consists of eleven players active in the Slovak Tipos extraliga and eleven from the Czech extraliga. The most experienced defender is Peter Čerešňák with 105 starts.
“Once again, we tried to invite new faces to the national team, so that we could imagine what it would be like to play for Slovakia at the international level. We have two new defenders. In addition to them, we also have experienced representatives who should lead the team at the German Cup. We are curious , especially young and new players will cope with the international participation that awaits them,” said the general manager of the national team, Miroslav Šatan, for the portal hockeyslovakia.sk.
THEY FOUND A SUBSTITUTE FOR HAŠČÁK
Frühauf will join the already stable assistant Podkonické, who has been working alongside Ramsay in the national team since the 2018/19 season. Until recently, he worked as an assistant in Dukla Trenčín. The main task of the 40-year-old former representative will be coaching.
In addition, he will also act as a national team scout. As part of the new agenda, he takes over parts of the duties that were performed last year by assistant general manager Oto Haščák. Frühauf worked with the “A” coaching staff a few months ago in preparation for the World Cup in Finland.
After the end in Trenčín, he became a season-long assistant to the Canadian head coach. “It is a huge honor and a challenge at the same time. Also a big responsibility, since we are representing our country. I will do my best so that at the end of the season, together with my coaching colleagues and players, we will be successful and proud.” said Frühauf, who represented Slovakia at the 2010 WC.
He added to the post of national team scout: “After Oto Haščák, who did a great job, there was a hole in the field of scouting potential adepts for the national team. He will not simply be a full-fledged replacement. That is why I collected data earlier so that Craig, Andrej or Miro had supporting information about all the players. , so that the management of the national team and coaches are in regular contact with potential representatives, which thanks to closer communication we will get information that will help us in making representative selections.”
The Slovak national team will meet in Bratislava on Monday, November 7 in the afternoon before the German Cup. After several training sessions, they will fly to Germany on Wednesday. In Krefeld at the traditional November event, they will play against Austria on Thursday, November 10 from 4:15 p.m. After a day off, they will continue the tournament on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. against Denmark, home Germany will be their opponent a day later from 2:30 p.m. All duels will be broadcast live by RTVS Šport.
