Ukraine calls on the UN to immediately investigate the supply of Iranian drones to the Russian Federation
Khrystyna Hayovyshyn, deputy representative of Ukraine’s mission to the UN, said at a meeting of the Security Council that the investigation into the supply of Iranian drones to the Russians should begin now.
This was reported by the correspondent of Ukrinform in New York.
Hayovyshyn called on “all states to advocate for any possible steps to stop supplies from Iran of such UAVs, missiles or conventional weapons that can be used in Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.”
The diplomat said that on October 14, Ukraine officially appealed to the UN Security Council with a request to start a corresponding independent investigation. “In our letter, we drew attention to the alarming situation that has developed around Iran’s transfer to Russia of the Mohajer and Shahed series of BPLA, in particular, at the end of August 2022,” the post-pred’s deputy noted.
According to her, Ukraine informed the Security Council about Russia’s use of Iranian weapons drones long range for attacking the civilian population and infrastructure facilities. “This is a flagrant violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed by China, France, Germany, Great Britain, the United States, the European Union and Russia itself, and then adopted by UN Security Council Resolution 2231 from 2015,” Hayovyshyn added.
She noted that the deliberate abuse of the provisions of the UN Charter to obstruct the investigation is “an obvious attempt to put pressure on the secretariat to pay off its own responsibility.”
As it happened, the Security Council meeting was initiated by Russia in response to letters sent to the RBs of France, Germany, Great Britain and the United States, which stated that the transfer of drones by Iran to the Russian Federation would confirm resolution 2231. Russia claims that the UN leadership is not authorized to send experts to inspections at the call of members of the organization.
