Toulouse: a petition bought for the Mirail waste incinerator to be rebuilt elsewhere
The defense collective of the Saint-Simon district in Toulouse has launched an online petition for the Mirail waste incinerator to be rebuilt but elsewhere, far from homes.
In a report published last September, the Zero Waste Toulouse association explained that the Mirail waste incinerator in the district of the same name was the most polluting in France despite its compliance with the emission standards in force. Toulouse Métropole, in charge of the management of this site, launched a vast consultation in order to consult the residents and the local actors on the future of the site. But according to the collective of the inhabitants of Saint-Simon, the first discussion meetings “show that the decision-makers are most certainly moving towards the construction of a new incinerator in the same place”. Except that the inhabitants have been deploring for years various nuisances linked to the presence of this incinerator but also are part of concerns about their health.
This is why they decided to launch an online petition on the change.org platform. Already several hundred people have given their support. The residents indicate that the choice to rebuild an incinerator in the same place “would condemn tens of thousands of inhabitants of these districts, children of schools and colleges, employees of companies… to be exposed to its discharges for new decades”.
With this petition, the inhabitants want the incinerator to be rebuilt “far from residential areas and populations in order to eliminate the potential dangers it presents”.
