cyclists up 23% in 2022
In one year, the number of cyclists has increased by 23% to Annecy. This is what emerges from the annual count of the Roule & Co association. We will advise you to take stock of the subject.
A 23% increase in one year
Each year, the Roule & Co association carries out a count of cyclists in Annecy. The latest was released in early October. Tuesday 04 and Thursday 06, 22 volunteers carried out the costing by positioning themselves at twelve different places in the city. In all, 2,561 cyclists were rewarded. This is double from 2018, when the first count was made. And in one year, the increase is also significant, since the number of people on bicycles is up by 23%.

The craze is therefore clearly on the rise and can be explained, according to the Roule & Co association, by “the securing and development of the roads” in favor of cyclists. On the other hand, the Cycle Plan of the agglomeration having been voted, it must expect new developments. Another reason to decide to leave the car in favor of the bike.
Greater progress on the side of Seynod
While all the sectors observed show an increase in cyclists, it should be noted that Seynod is experiencing a particularly significant increase in bicycles. More generally, the west of Greater Annecy tends to abandon the car in favor of this soft mode of transport. The Roule & Co association also highlights another sector, where many children are circular. This is the Vignières and Petit-Port roundabout, coming from Veyrier-du-Lac.
The road development works have had a significant impact on the number of cyclists at the flyover of theRhone Avenue and the avenue Gambetta underground. Thus, the presence of bicycles has risen sharply over the past two years.
Vélonecy, an offer that has won
Electric bikes represent 1 out of 3 models. At the same time, the Vélonecy offer has been widely developed and democratized throughout the Greater Annecy conurbation. They reflected 10% of bicycles, compared to only 1% in 2018. It should be noted that they remained mainly observed in distant and more eccentric sectors of Annecy city center.
The aid purchase device victim of its success
Due to the very large number of requests received in 2022, the aid scheme for the purchase of cycling equipment in Greater Annecy has been forced to close its doors for the rest of the year. Since its opening in April, more than 2,400 files have been submitted and the budget allocated to the system has been exceeded. More than 100 requests are already on the waiting list.
Where to rent a bike in Annecy?
If you cannot take advantage of Greater Annecy’s aid for the end of this year 2022, it is still possible to rent a bike. We will think in particular of the Vélonecy public service. It is possible to rent for a short trip as well as for a long period.
Another option is to go through private rental companies in Annecy. There are many of them within the agglomeration, such as Roul’ma Poule or Pédal’Douce.
Take advantage of state aid to invest in a bicycle
Until December 31, you can take advantage of state aid to invest in a bicycle. It can be granted directly and even if Greater Annecy no longer has the possibility of allowing residents to benefit from its system. State subsidies are spread out as follows:
- 150€ for a classic new bike
- €400 to €2,000 for an electric bike, cargo bike or adapted bike
- €1,500 to €3,000 for the conversion bonus
Reminder of traffic rules for cyclists
If you have just acquired an electric bicycle or are planning to do so, here are some safety rules to remember:
-
You have the obligation to take the cycle paths presented to you.
-
In the absence of a cycle lane, you must ride on the right of the roadway.
-
You must not ride on sidewalks.
-
In meeting areas, it is advisable not to drive more than 20 km/h.
-
If there are several of you riding, remember to ride in single file or two abreast at the most. When you are overtaken by a vehicle, stand one behind the other.
-
Remember to ensure your safety by wearing a helmet.
Like a car, cyclists are subject to compliance with the Highway Code. Finally, it is recommended to have your bike serviced every 300 kilometres. If you have a Vélonecy in long rental, you can do it for free. Some associations like Roule & Co also allow you to repair your bike yourself, while being supervised.
