A square named after Idir in the center of Toulouse
This is a first since the death in May 2020 of the Algerian singer and intellectual Hamid Cheriet, known as the artist of Idir. The town hall of Toulouse baptized, on Tuesday, October 25, a square in the city center in the name of this singer of Kabyle expression.
It is an initiative of the deputy mayor of Toulouse, Fella Allal, from the wilaya of Tlemcen. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 25 in the presence of the mayor of Toulouse Jean-Luc Moudenc, but also of Djilali Lahiani, another deputy mayor, very involved in the realization of the initiative alongside Fella Allal.
It is important to note that this initiative, motivated by the Algerian community, coincided with the anniversary of the birth of the author of ” Vava Inuva » a certain October 25, 1945 in the region ofAth Yeni, in Kabylie. The place that bears his name is materialized by a beautiful white plaque hung on a pillar on which one can read “Place Idir, Algerian singer, author, composer, performer and musician of Kabyle expression. 1945 – 2020”.
Note that Fella Allal was elected in this city where there is a high concentration of Algerian nationals from western Algeria. Since joining the Toulouse City Council, she has been appointed deputy mayor, delegate for the fight against discrimination and for equal citizenship.
As stated above, this is the first time that a public place has given its name to the Algerian artist and intellectual. This is not the case for the other singer engaged Matoub Lounes, which gave its name to several streets and squares in different cities of France.
