Tomasz Wójtowicz. The first Pole in the pantheon of volleyball celebrities
Wójtowicz was the first Pole to be made for the volleyball pantheon of celebrities in 2002, in which is the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke in the US state of Massachusetts, where in 1895 William Morgan has a new game to start the day in volleyball. After Wójtowicz, three other Poles – Stanisław Gościniak (2005), Edward Skorek (2006) and Hubert Jerzy Wagner (2010) – went to the pantheon of volleyball celebrities.
Wójtowicz was born on September 22, 1953 in Lublin. This year he was awarded the title of an honorary citizen of the city.
He came from a volleyball family. His mother Bogumiła and father Kazimierz practiced this discipline, his father was later a coach (including Avia Świdnik and Legia Warszawa), as well as volleyball and also (2) Tomasz’s brother – Wojciech.
Wagner’s team
He started his career in the Lublin MKS, which once won with AZ in the second-tier team MKS-AZS, moved to Avia Świdnik, advancing with her to the top league and choosing only a bronze medal in the history of senior volleyball in Lublin. As an Avia player, he was presented by Hubert Wagner, Polish Control, which won the championship in Mexico in 1974, and two years later in Montreal, the Olympic gold medal.
After the Moscow Olympics (1980), where Poland took fourth place, Wójtowicz i.a. with Legia Warszawa, he won the Polish Championship, and then for eight years he played for Italian clubs. He has performed in bands in Modena, Parma, Ferrara and Citta di Castello. His club achievements include the European Cup of National Champions won with the Santal Parma club (1985). In those years, it was considered the best position in the world. In the case of Poland, he made 325 appearances.
Earlier, they were the European junior vice-champion from Spain (1972) and a year later with a bronze medal in the Dutch Voorburg (1973). He was runner-up in Europe four times: Belgrade (1975), Helsinki (1977), Paris (1979) and Berlin (1983).
In an announcement in 2000 by the International Volleyball Federation – the FIVB plebiscite for the Beck of the 20th century, Wójtowicz was in the final net.
In the Command of the year of birth, he was awarded the Polish Cross of the Order.
