Bilbao achieves the highest number of tourists in history – Norte Exprés
In the post-COVID period, Bilbao resumed the upward trend that it had been showing before the outbreak of the pandemic as a tourist destination in the summer season.
This is confirmed by the figures obtained last summer, in which the Villa has reached the largest influx of visitors in history. The hotel occupancy survey published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) corresponding to last September, allows us to compare how many tourists have stayed in hotels in the different communities and provinces between the months of June and September of this year and of 2019.
Galicia has increased the number of travelers staying in its hotels by 9.07% (198,275 more people), the Basque Country by 7.17% (93,132), Murcia by 6.82% (37,052), the Balearic Islands by 5, 29% (361,977) and the Canary Islands by 4.94% (168,626 people).
Within the Basque Country, the greatest recovery compared to 2019 was in Gipuzkoa with 49,261 more travelers than in 2019, up to a total of 540,963, that is, 10% more. Álava with 9,652 more tourists than in 2019 (+5.6%) and Bizkaia with 34,220 more visitors (+5.3%) have also managed to exceed pre-pandemic figures
The community that has been the farthest from the number of travelers prior to the appearance of the covid is Madrid, 11.40% below, with almost half a million tourists less than in the summer of 2019 (496,523 people).
Catalonia has been the community with the most travelers staying in hotels in the four summer months of this year, 9,147,001; followed by Andalusia, with 8,134,134; Balearic Islands, with 7,209,784; the Valencian Community, with 3,960,432; Madrid, with 3,858,821; and the Canary Islands, with 3,581,468.
By province, the one that has improved its data the most is A Coruña, with an increase of 17.05% (156,659 more people), followed by Lugo, with 10.06% more (33,271 people), and Gipuzkoa, with 10 .02% (49,261 people).
On the contrary, Granada has received 17.99% less travelers staying in hotels (208,706 people), Córdoba 14.89% less (60,147 people) and Zamora 13.69% less (16,827 people), in addition to Melilla , which is 23.59% below.
The province with the most tourists staying this summer was Barcelona, 4,807,071, ahead of Madrid, with 3,858,821, and Málaga, with 2,578,759.
