From the outside, Bulgaria looks very confused
Politicians in Bulgaria need to talk to each other
Escalation of the conflict in Ukraine is imminent, we must measure actions on the part of all”
“Things are not looking good with the war in Ukraine. Even the suspension ì at the moment does not mean that it will lead to a calming of the international situation. At the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine, we had already entered a period of global instability that would last for a long time. in a period of division in which the world will be divided into at least two groups of countries – on one side is the West, on the other – the countries close to Russia and China, and on the third side – now from the Middle East, Africa”.
This is what Nikolay Mladenov, former foreign minister, former UN special envoy for the Middle East, now a member of the Washington Institute for Middle East Policy, director general of the Diplomatic Academy in Abu Dhabi, told BNR.
And additionally, the war in Ukraine seems clear – who is the aggressor, who is the victim, but “the further a country is from the front line, the more it will distort the attitude towards the crisis in relation to its own national interest”.
“The financial divide we are heading towards – the recession, the inflation – is worrying. All this will have long-term effects on many countries. Against this background, international countries are very weakened.”
Mladenov emphasizes that the position of Europe in the direction of the war is a statement, since the aggression must be stopped:
“But even in the last decades, European development will depend on cheap energy sources. We must realize that the transition of detachment from this type of dependence will be painful. to pay that price. The more involved this process is, the more painful the transition will be.”
In his words, Europe takes it for granted that the world will be with us: “We need to better express the position we take as a low union. We have to realize that for the support we want from other countries, we also have to give something”.
Nikolay Mladenov’s prediction is that there will be an accidental or purposeful escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, and with necessary measured actions by all.
than in recent years, from the outside Bulgaria looks very confused, “which is a natural result of the foreign policy confusion”: “When we see this wandering – are we going to help Ukraine, are we not going to help, it can hardly be expected to be a consistent foreign policy position that would is broadcast from our country… The Bulgarian people are always very reasonable when they go to vote and their message is “sit down and understand each other”. It is irresponsible to say that you don’t want to talk to this or that. This is visible from the outside and it is due to the foreign policy behavior of the state. It is nationally irresponsible to go from election to election. There must be conversations”.
