Index – Homeland – Gergely Gulyás: Ukraine is Hungary’s friend and protege
In his speech at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Gergely Gulyás emphasized: the struggle of the ’56s was hopeless and hopeless, yet they accepted certain death, because they knew they were right. The testimony of the ’56s proves that the meaning of the struggle is not only victory, and that the majority does not always stand behind the truth, but it is better to be alone than to live in a lie, said the minister, according to the MTI report.
The Fidesz politician also talks about the fact that patriotism gives a person a different task in every age: in 1956, love for the country had to be proved with a weapon, with a public stand against the dictatorship, and with the sacrifice of one’s life. It is easier today, but we live in no less decisive times in terms of our survival.
Effective national interest enforcement does not require a Molotov cocktail, it would be enough if Hungarian public figures love their country more than they hate the freely elected government
said the minister in his speech.
In his speech, Gergely Gulyás also addressed the Hungarian and Ukrainian young people who came to the ceremony from Subcarpathia, who arrived together and are also here with us today. Their parents perform frontline service.
Just as the 200 Transcarpathian Hungarians who, after 66 years, again became victims of Russian armed aggression, performed frontline service. Unfortunately, there would be no reason for us to be in solidarity with Ukraine, as the Transcarpathians have been in relation to Hungarians in recent years and decades, but we have every reason to help a country that is fighting heroically to defend its own freedom, territorial unity and sovereignty accepted by the Russians in an international agreement
– pointed out the minister, who reminded that in recent months, Hungary organized the largest humanitarian assistance due to the situation in Ukraine. Gergely Gulyás added:
We see the human suffering, we see the destroyed homes, the torn apart families, the people fleeing the war. The nation of 1956 can only say: whoever fights for its freedom and national independence is a friend and patron of Hungary.
