Two 2017 French champions on call
Let’s start first with a recent and pleasant period for all Monegasque supporters: the title of champion of France 2017 and the epic in the Champions League. Because yes, two players from this squad have played in both teams, namely Djibril Sidibe and Adama Traore. Arrived from LOSC in 2016, the right-back was one of the executives and played 47 games during this season, scoring three goals, including one against… Lille (4-1 success).
Now at AEK Athens, he has stayed at the club for six seasons, including one on loan to Everton in 2019-20, and has played a total of 174 games for six goals and 23 assists. For his part, the midfielder arrived from Lille during the 2015 summer transfer window. Present at AS Monaco for five seasons, including three on loan, he played a total of 25 games, including seven during this famous 2016-2017 season for a goal. He also faced Lille during this same meeting.
Mounir Obbadi, the tireless man in the shadows
A meeting during which a former Monegasque also scored for Lille: mounir obbadi. Recruited in January 2013, he then participated in the rise in Ligue 1 by being a member of the typical UNFP team of the season, and then enjoyed a prosperous year in Ligue 1 under the orders of Claudio Ranieri (31 games for three goals scored) despite XXL recruitment.
Among this recruitment, we note in particular the return of Eric Abidal to the club of the Principality, 11 years after his departure for… Lille in 2002. Arrived in 2000 for the first time at 21 years old, he therefore did not participate in the AS Monaco’s seventh French championship title obtained during the 1999-2000 season. Unlike Christophe Pignol, present with the Rouge et Blanc between 1997 and 2000, before joining LOSC in stride, until 2002.
Claude Puel, from French champion with Monaco to coach of the year at LOSC
He was then under the orders of Claude Pouel when he wins this title of champion of France. He, who has spent his entire career as a player with the Principality club, is in fact converting to coaching, and has his first experience of AS Monaco. On the bench from January 1999, he wants to see his team evaluated with an attractive game. Principles which are rewarded by a record of 20 wins, 5 draws and 9 defeats for 69 goals scored during this 1999-2000 season.
Following his departure in 2001, he signed for Lille for an afternoon to stay there for six seasons (299 matches on his clock). An emblematic coach in the North, the former midfielder qualified them for the Champions League twice, won the 2004 Intertoto Cup and was elected coach of the year 2005 by France Football.
