The Slovenian HSE appointed Viktor Vračar to the head of the problematic TEŠ coal plant
The State Energy HSE has announced management changes. It was written that the general manager Viktor Vračar will transfer to the management of TEŠ, the only coal-fired power plant in the country, which is temporarily suspended due to supply problems.
Officials insist that the outage at Velenje Coal Plant in Slovenia does not threaten the country’s energy stability. Nevertheless, the latest news from the owner, the government-controlled Holding Slovenske elektrarna (HSE), shows that it is taking the matter seriously. The supervisory board appointed director Viktorj Vračar as the head of the Šoštanj Power Plant (TEŠ).
Finance reported that Tomaž Štokelj, director of GEN-I, is said to be the favorite for Vračar’s successor as CEO. He is a close associate of Prime Minister Robert Golob, who led GEN-I before the last election campaign.
The only remaining coal-fired power plant in the country dependent on a single coal mine, stopped working a week ago fuel stocks for the winter, while importing electricity is cheaper. The decision was prompted by a rock strike in Premogovnik Velenje, which reduced the planned production for 2022 by an estimated 7%.
If there are no interruptions in the electricity supply in Slovenia, TEŠ will not operate until the end of November
The problem is that the Krško Nuclear Power Plant is undergoing regular overhaul until November 2, so Slovenia currently buys electricity abroad and covers 75 percent of its domestic consumption. It is planned that TEŠ will be idle until November 30, unless the HSE has to turn it on again in the event of supply disruptions.
Vračar will take over TEŠ on November 8.
“Regarding the Slovenian thermal power plant, which provides a third of all Slovenian electricity production, it faces major challenges in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the TEŠ energy facility and thus the supply of electricity to Slovenian companies and households. He knows the company TEŠ well, as it performs key tasks on this path, which is the green transition of TEŠ and the entire region,” the HSE announced.
The current director, Matjaž Vodušek, resigned this week for personal reasons.
TEŠ is testing the use of coal imported from Indonesia.
