VIDEO Slovakia sends 40 police officers to the Hungarian-Serbian border
According to the minister, Slovak policemen will operate in mixed patrols. Their mission should last two months for now, after which it should be reassessed. According to him, police officers from other countries, such as Austria, also operate on the Hungarian border. He sees the question for the future as whether they will add another country to the strengthening of the external border so that it makes sense.
“We are preparing another 20 or 30 police officers for Frontex, because I think that Frontex is the agency of the European Union that should secure the external border,” Mikulec zoomed in. As he added, most of the EU member states agreed with these proposals last week at the ministerial meeting in Luxembourg. According to him, Slovakia brought strong messages to the meeting about the need to comply with the Schengen Code and the Return Directive.
The presence is mainly moral support for Hungary
Police President Štefan Hamran added that the presence of Slovakia on the border is especially a moral support for Hungary. “They were on their own for many years. I am very glad that the political elites at the European level agreed on what the minister and we have been saying for a long time – not to introduce internal border controls, but a large external border and help our partners.” he stated.
According to Hamran, securing the external Schengen border is not only the goal of a specific state, but of everyone, it helps in the fight against illegal immigration, operation, human trafficking, reduces security risks in Slovakia and in the European area, as well as protects international relations. He pointed out that while, for example, the police intercept hundreds of migrants a day on the Slovakian-Czech border, there are thousands on the Hungarian-Serbian border.
