Toulouse residents love the markets. And their chosen ones become theirs! According to the town hall of Toulouse, there are currently nearly 80 markets of all kinds in the districts of the citymaking work 1500 traders on the public domain. Making the Ville Rose one of the most prolific towns in France. Food, textiles… there is something for everyone.
New markets in recent months
In 2022, new markets have emerged as in Place Héraclès, since the end of Maywhile about fifteen have been created since 2014 and the return to business of Jean-Luc Moudenc.
The project acted in March 2021…
In the chapter of creations, the Basso Cambo district is concerned. In a deliberation voted by the municipal council on March 19, 2021the creation of a large open-air market had been recorded in the public car park located Place Edouard Bouillères, next to the Quick and opposite the terminus of metro line A. The objective was then to “develop a market comprising a food and non-food offer offered by around a hundred retailers and producers”.
… but traders are getting impatient
18 months later, the project skates. This has the gift of annoying the traders concerned by the project. As Sofiane BelkhodjaDelegate of Grand Mirail merchants.
“The implementation is not done and the meetings with the elected official of the town hall, Jean-Jacques Bolzan, do not succeed. We are taken for a walk”.
No market on Saturday morning in the 31 100
Although the Grand Mirail district is fairly well supplied with markets (Bellefontaine, La Faourette, Reynerie, which is one of the largest markets in the Pink City), “there are none on Saturday mornings within the perimeter of 31 100”, continues Sofiane Belkhodja.
“I know a lot of traders who share in Montauban or Carcassonne on Saturday because there is no possibility of staying in Toulouse. We could easily make a market for the people of Toulouse, in Basso Cambo, on Saturday morning”.
The merchant, who claims to have “supported the list of Jean-Luc Moudenc” in the 2020 municipal elections, denounces “broken promises”. And even despairs: “There are only markets in the city center! “.
“We have not lost sight of the project”
On the side of the Capitol, Jean-Jacques Bolzan, the elected official in charge of covered markets and open-air markets, evokes “a project studied for several years” and “the complexity of creating a market in a closed square”.
“We have not lost sight of the project, we are going to find a place. Will it be Saturday or Sunday? It is not closed. There is the will of the town hall on this file, but no specific timetable.
The next meeting between the actors is scheduled for November 2022. Will the Basso Cambo market project pass the second? In any case, the merchants of Grand Mirail hope for certainty and a calendar that is not similar to the Greek Calendes…
