PICTURES. Prince Albert II meets the King of Spain Felipe VI
A visit under the sign of the memory of Prince Albert I, whose centenary is celebrated this year.
Prince Albert II continues his memorial trip in the footsteps of Prince Albert I. After the Azores and Lisbon on October 13 and 14, the Sovereign traveled to Spain and more specifically to Madrid and Puente Viesgo.
During his visit to Madrid, Prince Albert II discovered, at the headquarters of the Higher Council for Scientific Research, an exhibition on Spanish Oceania at the time of his great-grandfather. A commemorative exhibition on the role played by Prince Albert I in Spain in the field of oceanography was also presented to the Sovereign.
The links between Prince Albert I and Spain were strong since the Prince had been trained for two years, from 1866 to 1868, in the Royal Spanish Navy. It was also during the Madrid conference of 1919 that the Scientific Commission for the Exploration of the Mediterranean was created.
At the end of his visit, Prince Albert II and King Felipe VI had lunch together at the Zarzuela Palace.
The following day, Sunday October 16, the Sovereign visited the cave of El Castillo at the invitation of Miguel Ángel Revilla, president of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria. The opportunity to discover the future museum of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and to present a commemorative plaque. The Sovereign took the opportunity to recall the interest of the patronage of Prince Albert I in favor of prehistoric research.
