Kyiv: “Inaction” of the International Committee of the Red Cross for Ukrainian prisoners
Kyiv today denounced the “inaction” of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help Ukrainian soldiers held captive by the Russians, whom the international organization has yet to summon.
“Unfortunately in every exchange, we observe that the ICRC’s inaction has led to prisoners of war and civilians being held hostage being tortured daily by starvation or electric shocks,” said Ukrainian human rights official Dmytro Lubinets.
As he stated, the ICRC is not fulfilling its mission, which provides for visiting soldiers and civilians held captive in war zones.
The services of the Ukrainian presidency, Andrii Yermak, said for his part that “Ukraine expects and demands from the ICRC the necessary determination to gain access to the Ukrainian prisoners in Olenivka.”
Sanitary conditions at this prison, located on the Russian-held side of Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, have been widely denounced by the UN, and Kyiv has repeatedly called for an ICRC team to be moved there.
