Handball: Füchse Berlin are plagued by personal worries before the cup game
After the strong start to the season in the Handball Bundesliga, the Füchsen Berlin were worried before the second round of the DHB Cup. “It’s a difficult situation to start with. I would put the role of favorites on Flensburg,” said coach Jaron Siewert before the cup game on Wednesday at SG Flensburg-Handewitt (6:30 p.m. / Sky).
Because the Berliners have significant cases to complain about. In addition to the injured backcourt player Lasse Andersson, two other players, Fabian Wiede and Mathias Gidsel, are now returning from their international trips. The Danish national player Gidsel is out for around ten weeks with a hand injury. After the examination by the specialist in hand surgery, Michael Lehnert, the backcourt player suffered a bony tear on his left hand and an injury to the ligaments, as the club announced on Tuesday evening.
The absence of newcomer Gidsel is particularly painful. The 23-year-old Dane could hardly be stopped by the opponents in the first few games. Just like a month ago when the Berliners drew in the league game in Flensburg and Gidsel contributed eleven goals. “We already showed in Flensburg what it takes to do well there,” Siewert says optimistically.
The foxes coach has to improvise. Because with Gidsel and Wiede, both players for the right backcourt are now out. Siewert still believes in a chance. “We can play freely. Even without Gidsel, I think our team is better than last year. And it’s a cup game, anything can happen there,” said Siewert, who focuses on the defensive, “we’ll do everything we can put a good block and a particularly good retreat on the plate to hold out there.”
