Education in Luxembourg“Transmitting the values of democracy” to each generation
LUXEMBOURG – For the first time, Democracy and Citizenship Week will take place in high schools across the country, from October 24 to 28, at the same time as the election of student committees.
Encourage students, but also parents, to participate in school life, this is the goal of the week of democracy which will take place from October 24 in high schools. “It is important to transmit the values of democracy to each new generation, declared the Minister of National Education, during the presentation of the initiative. It is also something that must be experienced at school. This week is an invitation to principals to bring democracy to life at school”.
Education is a matter that concerns everyone. “You need different actors to make a child grow, to develop their skills. Parents and students are partners in making a school but also in developing a school system,” adds Claude Meisch.
“It’s our future. We have the right to speak and give our opinion”
To encourage students to participate in school, this week of democracy and citizenship coincides with the election of student committees. “It is important for students, for young people in general, to get involved. It is our future. On the right to speak and give our opinion, launches Dany Semedo, vice-president of the National Student Conference. What gives the most pleasure is to be the spokesperson for the pupils, for the youth of Luxembourg, to ensure that they are heard and taken seriously”.
Parents also play an important role at school. Elections for parent representatives can be an opportunity to get started. “I want to tell parents, get involved, get involved. It is about the future of your children, insists Alain Messen, president of the national representation of the parents of pupils. It’s important for everyone, at their level, who wants things to progress. The more we are, the more ideas we have, the stronger we will be and the more we will be able to make our voices heard”.
Strengthen student committees
A new regulation will soon make it easier for the student committee to exercise its function and strengthen its autonomy. Members will have specific ongoing training and support adapted to their needs, as well as a dedicated budget. “The goal is for all high schools to adopt a participatory approach and for students to be treated as competent actors in the school”, specifies Minister Claude Meisch.
