Albert of Monaco in Spain: why this new trip is symbolic
Albert II of Monaco embarked on a trip to Portugal and Spain in October 2022. From Ponta Delgada to the caves of Monte Castillo, His Royal Highness decided to follow in the footsteps of one of his illustrious grandparents.
Prince Albert of Monaco left the rock, Thursday, October 13, 2022, to undertake a highly symbolic journey. The husband of Charlene of Monaco has thus set the course for Portugal and Spain. A four-day trip placed under the theme of scientific research and environmental, but not only! As reported Monaco Grandstandthis escapade was also an opportunity for the son of Grace Kelly and Rainier III to follow in the footsteps of Prince Albert 1st, ancestor son nicknamed “the navigator prince”.
Albert II thus began his journey in Portugal, in Ponta Delgada, to take the avenue “Prince Albert Ier”, named in the memory of his ancestor and taken in 1904, in order to lay a wreath there. As our colleagues have reminded us, it was here, in the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago, that Albert, the first of his name, carried out half of his twenty-eight scientific campaigns. After that, the father of Gabriella Thérèse Marie and Jacques Honoré Rainier took over the management of Spain. Thus, on Friday October 14, he was welcomed in Madrid by the Higher Council for Scientific Research and attended the screening of a cinematographic work, in progress, on the scientist Odo de Buen. To end on a high note, on Sunday 16 October, the Monegasque set out to discover the caves of Monte Castillo located in the monoprovincial autonomous community of Cantabria.
Albert of Monaco the soul of a scientist?
Just like his ancestor Albert 1er, Albert II of Monaco is a navigation enthusiast. But this is not the only common point between the two men. The brother of Stephanie of Monaco is also very interested in the research. In 2017, he kicked off the operation Monegasque explorations aiming to reconnect with the maritime scientific explorations of his great-grandfather by focusing on thestudy of corals and marine species.
