FLORENCE – Thefts on trucks in construction sites while the workers are a job, thief surprised by the police
According to what was reconstructed by the agents of the Judicial Police Squad of the Rifredi Commissariat, the 65-year-old, around 11.30, would have spotted a truck with a crane parked near a construction site in via Mariti.
After having been all those who were busy and well focused on work, he would have approached the vehicle left unattended, would have opened a door and grabbed a man’s bag.
Then, with the meager booty of his arm (victim’s personal effects, documents, keys and a power bank), he would try to drive away undisturbed in his black minivan.
Throughout this short action, the protagonist of the story turned to the construction site with a work bag around him; this detail would in fact have jumped in the eyes of the investigators, who probably believe that this expedient had been a very but effective way to get confused among the workers, apparently passing to a simple worker (a technician in the sector or a surveyor for example) .
Once on the march with the stolen goods he did not go very far: the State Police, which for some days had already suspected his hand behind other similar thefts, had followed and observed his movements.
Finished in handcuffs for this latest blow, the man is in fact investigated for at least two other similar episodes, always hit on parked vehicles exposed to public faith and, in one case, even in the immediate vicinity of another construction site.
Last week, on 7 October to be precise, a taxi driver had left his service car unattended for a few minutes, soon after finding a bitter surprise: someone had taken away his wallet with cash inside in various foreign currencies. (for around 200 euros) and almost 800 euros in vouchers. The investigations, supported by technical investigations, immediately addressed the suspects of the police precisely to the same person arrested yesterday.
On Tuesday, the same man – on the basis of the investigative hypothesis – would have instead struck right near a construction site, this time in via Senese. Also in this case, the expense would have been a worker who as soon as he got back into the van realized that his pouch with documents and personal effects inside had disappeared.
Everything was later recovered inside the mailbox by the police who, in this case too, following some feedback, the finger was pointed at the same man.
Also to carry out this theft, the suspect would have wandered near the construction site and the workers’ vehicles, camouflaging himself among them with his unmistakable and apparently professional briefcase.
Pending the validation of the arrest, the 65-year-old – already known to the Police Forces – ended up under house arrest.
The proceeding is in the preliminary investigation phase and the suspect’s possible responsibility will be examined during the subsequent and eventual trial. Further investigative and evidentiary developments are not excluded, even in favor of the person under investigation.
