It premiered on October 11 in Thessaloniki new reduced store hours with the aim of saving energy by 15%.
However, market players are anxiously awaiting the Results at the end of the week and response of shopkeepers.

- Monday: 10:00 to 16:00
- Tuesday: 10:00 to 19:00
- Wednesday: 10:00 to 16:00
- Thursday: 10:00 to 19:00
- Friday: 10:00 to 19:00
- Saturday: 10:00 to 16:00.
What will apply in Athens?
At present, the discussion on its application to Athens, but also in other major cities of Greece has been suspended, since it has no legislative regulation.
It is worth noting, however, that despite the assurances of the Trade Association, how the reduction of the hours will not change the wages of the workers, the commercial workers of Thessaloniki hide the alarm bells. as the measure does not apply to supermarkets and multinationals, resulting in the creation of unfair competition.
“We will not accept a reduction in working hours, salary, layoffs or any other detrimental change to the employment contract because of energy crisis which lead the employers to reduce the hours of operation of the shops”, the trade employees explain.
ETH President: Jobs will not be at risk
The president of the Trade Association of Thessaloniki, Mr. Pantelis Filippidis, in a press conference granted by the association, pointed out that the measure is an attempt to help the shops of Thessaloniki and not to see images of impoverishment in the marketin the midst of the energy crisis.
“I think there will be a great turnout. It’s not mandatory, it’s optional, but people will decide what’s in their best interest and what they should do. We shift the consumer’s consumption habits back two hours. We try to make the whole system easier. We are making a huge effort to help the shops. We do not have the infallibility of the Pope. you have a proposal, a solution”.
The suggested schedule is reduced by six hours per week and can result in 15% energy savings on a monthly basis. “If things change, the next day in the morning the schedule will change,” he noted.
Asked about the chain stores and incidents of unfair competition large, he replied that the multinationals are not going to keep the reduced hours.
“Now have those who put it on the table discovered the unfair competition? Don’t they know what’s going on in the market? Unfair competition has existed since the first day the chains opened stores in Greece,” he noted.
At the same time, the vice-president of the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce, Nikos Ioannou, who underlined that no jobs will be at risk.
pointed out: “After thinking, the Board of Trade of Thessaloniki decided something that many have requested. That is, to reduce the opening hours in the shops. Our members we understand that their work does not come out after 19.00. And we are not only talking about the central markets, but also about regional ones”.
He added: “We have proposed this six hour reduction which does not affect jobs. On the contrary, it helps the worker to have a little more time to rest. And it also helps stores to save energy.”
Anxiety of salespeople
The retail workers may be in line with this particular proposal as they realize the economic and energy conditions, they are called to face the shops but as they argue, they will not allow to pay once more the consequences.
