The Yacht Club de Monaco promotes sustainable yachting
The month of September ended with two major events in the world of yachting, organized by the Monaco Yacht Club.
As part of “Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting”, the Monaco Yacht Club hosted two meetings. The first took place on September 25 and 26: the second edition of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous. The second was held on September 29: the Captain’s Club.
” The Yacht Club of Monaco and its President HSH Prince Albert II have provided for many years all actions in favor of sustainable development in the world of yachting. We must act collectively and very quickly. The YCM is a platform to present all the concrete solutions said Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco and President of Cluster Yachting Monaco.
During these two events, the sustainability of yachting was discussed, here is a summary of the ideas to remember, starting with the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous.
Technology and sustainability
” Yachting is smart said Frédéric Genta, Interministerial Delegate in charge of Attractiveness and Digital Transition of the Monegasque Government. Here, smart means intelligent yachting that serves as intelligent solutions to achieve its ambitions and in particular that of sustainability.
This is confirmed by Sheikh Rasheed Al Rushaid, Chairman and CEO of Al-Rushaid Group: “It is our responsibility to use the technological assets we have in hand to move towards more eco-responsible yachting, whether for our planet, for the oceans, but also for the new generation. To achieve this, we need smart solutions, but also talented execution that allows the project to grow “.
Protection and durability
” Today, we see the birth of hope for reconciliation between man and the oceans. We must make this transition to be its first beneficiaries. It is thanks to all the players that we will be able to see short-term benefits” followed by Olivier Wenden, vice-president and managing director of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
Reducing waste and pollutants, optimizing water and energy resources, knowing the movements of fauna and flora or even encouraging biodiversity in urbanized areas were mentioned. The preservation of the seas, oceans and the marine ecosystem through sustainable yachting was at the heart of the discussions. Various debates followed, in particular in light of the certain economic value of sustainability within a project.

Several prizes were awarded, including the 2022 International Smart & Sustainable Startup Awards, which went to ECOncrete. Committed to the biodiversity category, this Israeli start-up offers innovative concrete for maritime constructions allowing carbon storage and the preservation of biodiversity.
Captain’s Club
A few days after this event, it’s the turn of super-yacht captains to meet for the 26th Captains’ Forum. This meeting is part of the Captains’ Club which brings together 150 captains working on super-yachts and sailing under the YCM flag.
The various captains discussed tenants and resulting in new environmental issues. The importance of former future crews and of listening to their opinions on this subject particularly emerged during the debates. “J.I think they are the ones educating us in the sense that they are concerned about environmental issues explained Dan Smith, captain of an 84-meter motor yacht, the Savannah.
” Working in this industry is a duty for us: to improve it continued Dan Smith. ” It is important to preserve the environment for the next generation. The industry in the next 20 years, in my opinion, will suffer from a great pressure from the United Nations which will impose restrictions on carbon emissions. We must therefore take up the challenge todayI. »
Result of this meeting: work on new innovative ideas by facilitating exchanges between customers, shipowners, shipyards, architects and designers.
” I think that in the next few years we will have found an alternative to the fuel we currently use. It will therefore be necessary to develop a technology to produce less carbon emissions said Barry Sadler, Chartered Master Mariner occupational standard holder. ” From a sustainable climate perspective, the industry is moving towards social responsibility in an attempt to respond to global warming. »
The organizers now wish to bring together the entire ecosystem of boats with the organization on March 24, 2023, on the occasion of Monaco Ocean Week.
