Russia appoints new general to command troops in Ukraine war
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu an army general was appointed on saturday Even Sergei Surovik to command a joint force participating in the war in Ukraine.
“Army General Sergei Surovik has been appointed to lead a joint force in the area of a special military operation in Ukraine by the decision of the Russian Defense Minister,” TASS reported, quoting Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Gen. Igor Konashekov tells reporters.
He previously served as commander of Russia’s Eastern Military District and led Russian forces in Syria, reports TASS.
In particular, Russia recently annexed four regions of Ukraine – Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
The war between Russia and Ukraine appears to be entering a new phase after Kiev dealt a major blow to Moscow’s grip on reclaiming 2,400 square kilometers of territory in the country’s southern Kherson region “since the beginning of a full-scale war,” a senior Ukrainian official told CNN on Friday.
Kyrylo TymoshenkoThe head of the presidential office said that six settlements had been liberated in the Kherson region and 61 in the Beryslav region.
Tymoshenko said civilian evacuations continued amid massive destruction of key infrastructure in towns such as Arkhanhelsk, Vysokopilya and Osokorivka, all of which saw weeks of heavy fighting and indirect fire. Mine clearance is underway, he added.
Ukrainian forces have made steady progress since launching an offensive in Kherson late last month, and their successes have sparked rare criticism of Moscow’s war effort among pro-Russian figures.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the counterattack of his troops in his evening speech on Tuesday. “Ukraine’s army is advancing quite quickly and strongly during the ongoing defense operation in the southern part of our country,” Zelenskyy said in his evening speech.
“Our warriors will not stop. And it is only a matter of time before we expel the occupier from our entire land.”
