Thessaloniki: “Dad the War” thrilled the audience
With great success, in the theater of the Lazarist Monastery (Sokratis Karatinos Stage), the premiere of the new production of KTHBE, “Dad the War”, was held on Friday, October 7, directed by Konstantinou Aspiotis and dramaturgically edited.
The audience, excited, applauded throughout the show the large troupe that “came to life” in a scene from the most important anti-war comedies of the modern Greek Theater, his emblematic work. Iakovos Campanelliswhich this year celebrates the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Rhodes, 305 BC A tourist paradise becomes strategically important to the plans of the conquerors. The point of view of tourist activity, the depreciation of values, the inextricable link of profitability and economic development with war activity and – above all – the reminder that war remains, in all times, the father of profit, megalomania and of greed.
In the finale, in bowing, the spectators worshiped the performers and actors of the show who showed with their talent, energy and imagination – through comedy at the first level – the high symbolism of the work, which also refers to current situations by demonstrating. the absurdity of war and all those factors that over time play a role in the final shaping of things.
It is worth mentioning that the last time the play “Dad the War” was presented by KTHBE was in 1987, in a historical performance directed by Iakovos Kampanellis himself.
The play, one of Campanelli’s first plays, manages to pass into the realm of the timeless now, as it was first written in 1951, and speaking from the subject of 305 BC, it unfortunately looks like it was written for our current era, in the absolute . degree. Here are the author’s own words – written for the first staging of the work by the Art Theater (1980).
“The stimulus that resulted in the comedy ‘War Dad’ – unsuitable in the first place for a comedy – was provided by the Cold War tension that followed the great expectations. The hope that the war that a few years before the last war had ended seemed like childish naivety. Even then, the situation was murky and threatening. The allies seemed to be infected by the evil they fought and became both its victors and successors.
The thought of making this stimulus a play came by chance, when reading Paparrigopoulos I amused myself with the siege of Rhodes by Demetrius the Besieger – year 305 BC. Of course, I amused myself with what the old story led me to imagine. That’s how I was given the myth and the theatrical characters for a play that would certainly speak about current morals and passions.”
Director’s Note
Iakovos Campanellis, our great world-class writer, wrote and rewrote “Baba ton Polemos” on every occasion, as he himself has stated.
At the end of his life the conditions of war were unrelenting and the wars he himself experienced were many and continuous. After all, as Jean Zirondou said, “peace is the interval between two wars”. Unfortunately, in the absolute today we experience next to us (and not only) another war, which probably made our author bend over again on this great work of his.
In any case – unfortunately I repeat – today’s situation confirms once again how relevant and timeless “Dad” becomes and it becomes an occasion (along with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the author’s birth) to discuss with young people on some leading issues . . Let us see with this vehicle the paranoia – as paranoia as war – how man behaves for the purpose of financial gain. And let’s all decide together at the end of the day “what” we want to be in solidarity with and for “what” reason we should – or shouldn’t – really fight! I don’t want to say more things at this point, the show – I think – speaks for itself thanks to the truly wonderful actors who are on fire every day on stage, thanks to the amazing cast who have been around for the last few months and gave their best, thanks to the worthy technicians who are not visible but are terribly important and co-responsible for the result you see and thanks to the administrators and people behind many offices who support this work every day, for the purpose – all – of your own entertainment. All of the above are artists – ALL – and terrific craftsmen. All devoted to the theater and generous. And for these reasons and for many others, in this my first direction in the theater from which I graduated, I am the luckiest of all people.
I am grateful and thank them from the bottom of my heart and good for the audience to support this show for all of them and most importantly: !
