Slovakia is one step closer to early elections. SaS took a backseat, Matovič remains a staunch opposition
The beginning of the past week in politics was in the spirit of the dismissal of the Minister of Finance Igor Matovič. In the end, he will remain in his chair, but only the votes of three deputies were missing for him to end up at the head of the department. This would provide room for the SaS party to return to the negotiating table with former coalition colleagues.
In the end, that did not happen, which, according to the leader of the liberals, Richard Sulík, the party is taking note of and moving into a hard opposition. However, the failure to remove Matovič from his position also has another dimension. “A new coalition has been formed. OĽANO rules here. We are a family with fascists,” declared the former Minister of Economy. He added that it was the votes of the three members of Tarabov who left the ĽSNS that decided everything and kept Matovič.
The head of the parliamentary club of the OĽANO coalition movement, Michal Šipoš, countered these claims and justified the decision of the Tarabov people by saying that each of the deputies has his own mandate and decides according to his consciousness and conscience.
Tough opposition
Thus, according to the words of its chairman, after this failure, SaS is moving into hard opposition. Moreover, as Sulík pointed out, the liberals in the parliament will not only vote for the proposals that appeal to them, but are also ready to negotiate early elections.
Prime Minister Eduard Heger once again started to defend Igor Matovič after the vote of confidence in him. He emphasized that the meeting was unnecessary and that Slovakia has completely different priorities than the dismissal of the Minister of Finance.
Sulík’s statement about the selective support of draft laws was immediately confirmed during the vote on the proposal, which was supposed to introduce the material responsibility of politicians. Finally, the MPs, including SaS members, did not support the law, which Matovič has been talking about for a long time.
Of the 128 present, 54 MPs supported the proposal, 27 were against and 45 abstained. The amendment was supported only by OĽANO deputies and several unaffiliated deputies, as well as Ján Podmanický from Smeru-SD and Romana Tabák from Sme rodina.
After the vote, Matovič immediately started criticizing the liberals despite the fact that, with the exception of Tabák, not even his coalition partners from We Are Family and For the People supported the proposal. “If SaS MPs would come to their senses, the proposal would pass with them,” noted the Minister of Finance.
Uprising in OĽANO
However, this week Matovič also felt the rebellion directly in his ranks. Nine deputies sent him a request in which they criticize his aggressive rhetoric. They also announced that they would not participate in his appeal.
“It’s a clear sign that there are no sheep in the OĽANO club,” Prime Minister Heger commented on their decision. He added that there is no better example of healthy discussion within OĽANO.
The next step towards early elections was taken on Friday during a parliamentary session where MPs were supposed to discuss the draft budget. Boris Kollár, the chairman of the parliament and the people of We are a family, said earlier that if the budget is not passed, his movement in the coalition will end.
In the end, the proposal was not voted on. The liberals blocked the parliament and Sulík called the budget proposal dilettantish. He blamed the government in particular for the fact that it does not say “how much money will go where.” Matovič would thus have a blank check in his hand, claims the former Minister of Economy.
